Playing Every TMNT Character - The TMNT
Hello and welcome back to Undefeated at Locals! This week I left it up to the UaL Discord to vote for the character I play at locals. The choices were Wingnut, Rocksteady, Superfly, and The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 4 hander. Thanks to the campaigning of my buddy Magnus of Coping with Cardboard (If you aren’t reading and watching their content you should be! https://www.copingwithcardboard.com/) the vote went to The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I was looking forward to getting to this character as it just seemed like dumb fun and man, was I right this was an absolute blast so thanks Magnus!
When I originally built a list for these guys, I just included every good 1 and 2 check attack they could run like Sniping Spy, Warp Gate Portal, Lethal Slash, etc. Then I played against my Buddy Steven’s build using Aerial Kikosho, Rising Uppercut, and Mechazoids to stun out my board and smack me for big damage on my turns and thought maybe I should play that. I decided on neither. While discussing the deck with Marvin he pointed out that these brothers are the only deck that gets to unironically run Food Motivated, and that seemed super fun so that is what I went with, The deck was built with the main symbol being Air to have access to Electric Moth for draw, and more importantly, Massive Size for huge amounts of damage and Air also left me with access to Warp Gate Portal. The goal was build out as fast as we can as a 4 hander, then poke faster than our opponents can do 40 damage. I took the deck to our weekly locals at Kobolds Keep. Now did it work? Let’s find out together below!
In round one I fought the one and only Edgar who was on a really cool Grog Strongjaw Earth deck using Genghis Frog to make his almost all throws deck hit for huge damage. (A deck I will be stealing for a week at locals as well.) This is a hard matchup for the Ninja Brothers, 10+ damage throws take out 40 health pretty fast. Game one went to Edgar quickly. In Game 2 I was able to establish a much better board state and got to pull off a really cool play where I played Warp Gate Portal, used it to pull Food Motivated from the deck, Airshipped Warp Gate to hand and Played Food Motivated on 0 progressive. I followed that with Warp Gate into multiple Lethal Slash to take game 2. Game 3 was extremely close, but Edgar took it in the end with a VERY big Rip Apart. Round one was a 1-2 loss.
Round 2 was against my buddy Matt who was on his Earth Rocksteady deck he’s been working on. In game 1 I was able to build out for 3 turns taking minimal damage for an amazing foundation state. Turn 4 I opened with Food Motivated, committing my character and 2 battle Holds the Answer, the enhance drew me 2 more Food Motivated. I then stacked one of the committed Battles, to play Food Motivated repeating this again for 21 damage on one turn and ending with almost 10 cards in hand as a 4 hander was insane. Obviously after that, I took Game 1. Game 2 was the exact opposite, and I lost by turn 3 after Rocksteady constantly slammed cards into the cardpool for huge damage. Game 3 was again very close with me losing to more huge damage moves that outpaced the amount of times I could block. Turns out the Ninja Brothers are very susceptible to high damage moves, who knew. Round 2 was another 1-2 loss.
Round 3 was against Mirko II. Game 1 I built for 2 turns, sent a couple of pokes and then thought I was dead when I passed back after my turn 3. Fortunately for me my opponent overextended to leave me at 2 due to bad math and a well timed 3 check and I cracked back for game. Game 2 went much the same with my opponent over committing and checking repeat 3s allowing me to deal damage almost entirely uncontested. I took this round 2-0.
I finished the tournament 1-2 for 4th place which is FAR better than I expected. I went in wanting to win a single game with these guys and instead I won 4. Warp gate Portal, Food Motivated, and Massive Size are by FAR the MVP cards of the deck. I had a blast with this deck and would definitely play the deck again though I would add in some more defense to the deck as well as some ways to add speed to my moves, and I would probably also add Rising Uppercut in place of Dark Interruption. Thanks so much for reading. As always, my decklist is below if you want to check it out, also let me know in the comments if you’ve played these guys!
