Playing Every TMNT Character - Michelangelo
We are back for the second time this week, with another entry in my quest to Play Every TMNT Character!
A huge thank you to my friends at my local game store Game Kastle - Reno ran a special TMNT characters only event for my birthday! Decks were comprised of any standard legal cards, but characters had to be from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles only. This was such a cool event and got everyone playing interesting things.
I chose my favorite turtle, Michelangelo, The Wild Card on the Good symbol for this event. I chose Good to have access to Rejuvenating Smash, Rewind Throttle, and Always Cool.
This build was created with the goal of maximizing the use of Pizza Party to commit down the rivals’ foundations and gain back any health lost on their turn. Rejuvenating Smash remains an incredibly powerful card that we can play after a foundation for a nice poke that gains back more health and draws cards, or we can use it as our second block to do the same thing if the opponent plays multiple attacks. Rewind Throttle lets us target commit defensive pieces like Moment of Normalcy. Always Cool keeps us from going down a foundation on Mikeys once per turn which also gives a way to pick up an attack if it gets built in by Always Cool. The goal is to make the opponent make a choice, either they block the attack and give extra speed to our next or they take the damage and hope we are only poking. If they block, the bonus speed immediately enables the response on the Fa Jin Flurry & Third Wielder chains making for some huge speed and damage moves.
Round 1 of the event didn’t go as planned, I went against an April O’Neil and lost to mill out in an hour-long single game. This match was a slog to play, and I absolutely played it wrong and built out way too deep when I should have been building one and passing until I could sculpt a line they couldn’t deal with.
In Round 2 I went against a wild “The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” 4 hander Mechazoids deck that my buddy Steven put together. This deck was so fun to play against that it didn’t sting nearly as bad losing 0-2 to it. 40 health is a lot to chew through with Mikey, and it’s made even more difficult when you are getting hit with Rising Uppercut on your turn and then getting your entire board stunned down with Zoids during that Uppercut. If this deck sounds like fun, good because it is likely that this is the build I try when this character gets their turn in this series!
Round 3 was fought against a Donatello deck that I just happened to have also built for our resident tournament organizer to use. I ended up taking this game 2-0. Game one was over quickly when variance gave her almost no assets in the first 6 turns (There was a ton in the deck I promise!) Game two was a much harder fought victory but we took it in the end, Mikeys ability to de-build things like Hunting Mutants or Extra Supplies went a long way to making sure I survived their attack swings.
In Round 4 I fought a Leonardo running a lot of Vash, The Stampedes kit. These were some very fun games that I ended up taking 2-0 in the end. Several times in these games Pizza Delivery hilariously delivered Pizza Party to my hand multiple times making me happy I included it in the deck. Double Pizza Party to stun down 6 foundations and gain 6 health is both fun and powerful. One of my favorite defensive plays of the entire event was flipping Daily Training TO Build in Daily Training on my rivals turn, they then flipped their own to build in Leaving The Bebop, which I promptly added back to their hand while adding my face down Daily Training back to my hand which then got built back in by the other one.
I finished the tournament in 5th place at 2-2 and had a great time. Overall, I absolutely love this deck and will definitely continue refining and playing it often. Next, I want to try out a more aggressive version using almost entirely punches and all the punch support on the good symbol plus Fa Jin Flury of course.
The list is below as always if you want to check it out! Thanks for following along and remember “Wise man says forgiveness is divine but never pay full price for late pizza!” – Michelangelo
