Playing Every TMNT Character - April
Hello! Welcome back to Playing every TMNT Character at Undefeated at Locals. This week I played April O’Neil, High School Reporter on the Void symbol. I chose Void simply because the Ally attacks on All are basically nonexistent, they aren’t much better on Void but at least it gives access to The Lurkers Strike. This was an interesting deck to play, I feel this character would be WAY better with a different symbol, which I feel is a common problem in this, and many recent sets that I plan to give more of my thoughts on in a future article after I finish up this series.
I built this deck with the intention of using the good Void defensive pieces to survive while forcing my opponents to mill while using some of the Lurker’s review-centric kit to my advantage, since more often than not the card they mill will have us reviewing a card to draw. Like a lot of decks of this type, this one struggled to find enough damage to close out games as most of my attacks were being sent for printed stats. With most of the Ally attacks being relatively low stats this was a struggle. Mutant Mashup, Lurkers Strike, and April’s Investigation were all very cool but unfortunately the best attack in the deck was Sweeping Daggers which is the only non-Ally attack in the deck. Scum Bug was absolutely insane when I saw it and I would honestly up it to a 4 of if I ever play April again.
Let’s get into the matchups, I played this deck in week 4 of the Webcam Wednesday events.
Round 1 was versus Mount Lady II who was also on the Void symbol. I knew going into this matchup I was going to have a tough time getting any games to go in my favor as Mount Lady is doing a very similar thing to Godzilla albeit less efficiently. Every move getting 3 damage once they are at 3 counters makes it very tough to survive. I wasn’t able to deal much damage at all in either game we played and lost this round 0-2
In round 2 I fought a Water Leatherhead, Eager Expat deck in one of the longest single game I have had in a while. Through the game I cycled FAR more times than they did which is a huge problem when playing a mill deck. Again, I struggled with my attacks not being for enough damage to close the game out. I was able to do a decent amount of damage across many turns but in the end lost game one to milling myself out with my opponent at 5ish health and me at 1 health. Losing this round 0-1
Round 3 was against my good buddy Steven and another cool iteration of his Jamie Siu deck! I lost game one spectacularly fast. Game 2 I was able to string out pretty well and took the game turn 4 or 5, turns out base damage moves are a little better against 22 health characters than they are against 30+ health. Game 3 was lost when I couldn’t find enough damage to take the game. I ended round 3 1-2, and the event at 0-3.
Overall, April is an interesting idea that I wish had access to better attacks to make her gimmick more effective. I don’t think I would play the deck again unless her symbols got some better Ally attacks in future sets while she is still standard legal. As always, my decklist will be linked below. If you have played her or have a better idea for her let me know in the comments! Thanks for reading and see you next week as I continue this journey with only 5 characters left to go.
