Playing Every TMNT Character - Leatherhead

Welcome back to Undefeated at Locals!

This week I took Leatherhead, Eager Expat to my Local Championship! I started by playing the deck in this week’s Webcam Weekly but was only able to play 2 rounds due to getting stuck with a bye in the final round. I enjoyed the deck enough that I wanted to take it to the championship the next day. This deck is built on the Water symbol and is Marvins’s list card for card as there was no reason to change something that works. The goal of the deck is the same as any other Leatherhead, clog their cardpool and use that to kill them. Every attack either adds to their cardpool or draws us cards, Ray Fillet clogs their pool every attack we play. The foundations are either more draw power, defense, or in the case of Legendary Bandit, more cardpool stuffing.

In the webcam weekly I went 1-1 vs a Krista Lenz deck giving every attack Stun 1 and top decking bad checks or bad draws depending on where we were in the turn, we went into overtime in game 3 and had to call it a draw when they passed back to me. Game 2 I went 1-2 against a sick Shigaraki 3 deck running the Massive Mutant Machine game plan. I took game 1 pretty quickly but in games 2 & 3 they were able to get set up faster and it was over for me rather quickly. Got the bye in round 3 finishing 1-1-1 overall.

The next day was the local championship at Kobold’s Keep (Check them out at https://www.koboldskeep.com/ if you need singles!) Round 1 I played against a really cool Sasha Blouse, Food Fanatic deck running all the cool Chaos stuff! I took Game 1 after stuffing their cardpool with 5-6 face downs, plus one they blocked with, and then playing Knockout Punch for game after the discard for +7 and response burning them for 7. Game 2 they took with a 23-damage echoed Big Freaking Explosion after I built out too hard leaving me with too few cards in hand to block or discard for any real impact. Game 3 was mine after a hard fought back and forth where I finally was able to resolve a good string and clench the win.

Round 2 was against my buddy Ken and his Himiko Toga 3 deck, these were some very fun games that I took 2-0. I had to rely entirely on damage reduction for defense here due to Toga’s ability to make me commit one for every attack played. Game 2 of this game was the first time I was able to play Ray Fillet out all night and it went a long way in helping me close out the games.

Round 3 is where it started to go bad. I was against a Mt Lady 2 doing the normal Mt Lady 2 things, giving lots of things +3 damage, making maybe 1 attack per game unblockable, things of that nature. I was able to take game 1 rather quickly with the right build turn and a great set of attacks in hand. Games 2 and 3 I could not close out. Once every attack gets +3 damage, Leatherheads discard for damage reduction becomes far less effective. I ended this round 1-2

The 4th and final round was versus a Godzilla, King of the Monsters on the Earth symbol. Game one went much like the Mt Lady games 2 and 3, 3 damage to everything is tough for Leatherhead to deal with, more so in Godzilla as it starts right away not just after generating 3 tokens. Game 2 I had to build 2 and pass going first, then drew into a hand of nothing but attacks and promptly scooped the game as I knew there was no coming back from that. I ended the championship 2-2 for 5th place which is fine as I went in already qualified for worlds.

All in this is an extremely fun and powerful deck and I would absolutely play it again. The main pain points for this character are any deck sending 10 damage moves which is unfortunately what a good chunk of decks are doing right now. With that said, I do think Leatherhead is one of, if not the best character in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles set. As always the decklist I played is posted below. Thanks for following along and I will be back next week with another deck in my quest to play every character in this set!
