Playing Every TMNT Character - Bishop
Welcome back to Undefeated at Locals! This week I played Bishop, Robotics Engineer on the Void symbol. The main thing I learned while playing this deck is Mechazoids are FUN! I was a little worried that playing this right after playing Donatello would feel too similar, It didn’t, this was a blast to play, and I am excited to try a similar build with Donatello on top of it in the future. I chose Void over Evil for Sweeping Daggers, I also had Violent Animus Shot in the deck but would honestly move it to the sideboard for 2 more Technological Advantage in main if I were to play it again. The goal of the deck is to build in a ton of Mechazoids as fast as possible and then use them to tap down the rival’s board. Using things like Mechazoid Onslaught and Rebuilt Forces to do so and make for BIG attacks.
After a very poor showing with the deck in the first week of the return of Webcam Wednesday events I decided to play the deck in a second event because I was sure I was doing something wrong so this week I will outline two events with the deck!
In WcW, I did not perform well with the deck at all.
Round 1 I paired into Elijah with his crazy Elder Toguro deck, I went into this match expecting the typical control aspects of Elder leading up to one big swing with True 100% Unleashed and that is not what I got. Instead, I got hit with Beast Titan Attacks, Maximum Overhaul and Chronostasis Trigger, and then ended by True 100% Unleashed. In game 2 I took him to 5 health and only had Wingnuts Sabotage left in hand with no way to find additional damage, this would prove to be a recurring issue with the deck. We played 2 very entertaining games that I lost spectacularly.
Round 2 was against 5Grain and their Rodan, Giant Monster of the Sky deck. I also lost this match 2-0, again leaving them at very low health after long strings failing to find the final damage to end the games. Playing into a deck also running Sweeping Daggers is always interesting as it becomes a game of who can find one to play first to remove the copies in the others discard. This deck is the main reason I would not main board Violent Animus Shot going forward as it is devastating to lose it and a Mechazoid to your rivals Sweeping Daggers in games where the rival is not running backups.
Round 3 was yet another 0-2 loss, this time to Kameron Caldwell’s Leatherhead, Eager Expat deck. Even though I lost this was another very fun set of games with a great opponent. Adding a bunch of cards to my cardpool did make it difficult to block but I was still holding my own until the Knockout Punches came out and dealt a ton of damage every time they hit as they are supposed to do. I was able to pull off some cool swings on my turn but ultimately was unable to close out the games. Ending WcW 0-3 with no wins at all.
After the shutout that was WcW I decided to give the deck another shot at locals. I made no changes to see if it was me or the deck.
Round 1 I paired into Marvin and his Ryu, World Warrior deck, like Donatello, this is a tough matchup. I was able to survive a while and got a few hits in to do some damage, but Marvin blocked a ton of moves, hit me with a few Rising Uppercuts on my turns which is hard for any 23-health character to deal with. I lost this round 0-2 and it wasn’t looking any better for me at locals.
Round 2 was against Jester Lavorre, Prankster Priestess. I took game one very quickly after building in multiple zoids and then my opponent over committed on their turn leaving me able to commit their last foundations with my Zoids on my first attack allowing me to string with no chance of them blocking. Game two was close and I only pulled out the win after being able to block their echoed Big Freaking Explosion due to checking Extra Supplies at the exact right time to build it in and allow me to commit Mechazoids to pass the check. Took this round 2-0
Round 3 I played against Rocksteady, Easily Angered piloted by my good buddy Matt whom you may know as My Hero Goob, if you don’t go check him out on Twitch at https://www.twitch.tv/myherogoob . Game one I took after surviving his string of lethal slashes into more lethal slashes, into falling skies by holding and drawing into all my high blocks. I sent a Rebuilt Forces as a 9 low for 23 with Matt having minus 5 to his next check. Game 2 was similar as I was able to hold all my good high blocks and then crack back with multiple Mechazoid Onslaught, picking one up with Military Airship to play it a total of 3 times and hit him hard. I again took this round 2-0 finishing the tournament 2-1 for 2nd place.
This deck proved to be VERY good for locals but definitely struggles into control matchups and anything more meta relevant. All that said this deck is one of the most fun I have played in this entire “Playing Every Character” series. I do think the decks strategy would be better with Donatello at its head with his uncapped damage. As always if you want to give it a try my list is below!
