Playing Every TMNT Character - Donatello

Welcome back to Grant Plays Every TMNT Character!

This week we have Donatello, The Smart One, on the Void Symbol. This character is so FUN! I truly think he is the “Best” of the four turtles. I chose Void mostly to have access to Sweeping Daggers, Cape of No Return, and Botan’s Coaching. Though after seeing Dawson’s Good Symbol version with Spirit Gun Final on stream versus Marvin’s Ryu deck in last weekend’s Webcam Warriors event, I am very excited to give that build a try as well!

The goal of the deck is pretty simple build as many assets as possible, both by playing them and by blocking with them, and survive long enough to swing big. The hardest part here is surviving, things like Rifle Arm, Juggling Groceries, and Moment of Normalcy help but it still takes some good planning and holding onto plenty of blocks.

Other than the few weeks I messed around with Spotlight Sasha Blouse, Food Fanatic, I have rarely played a deck with more than 2-3 assets, so this deck was different for me. Soup put in more work for me in this deck than either of my Sasha Blouse decks, building on play is so good here, we can block with it and build it without using Donny’s response, if its in the discard we can pick it up with Collecting Scraps and play it next on a 2 and build it, it was also great for eating up breaker abilities my opponents played against me. Massive Mutant Machine was fun but I would never run it as more than a one of since we cannot cheat that one in, in 2 games I was able to re-ready it with Doty and that was fun. Attack wise, Sweeping Daggers, Wingnut’s Sabotage, and Collecting Scraps all worked out great, Spinning Swing was fine, but I wish I had it at two copies instead of three.

So how were the matches?

Round One I fought Hang Ten/Phantom Threat Deku, On the Move, this did not go well for me. I struggled to build out fast enough to take him to 0 before he had a million foundations and at that point this build of Donny lacks the correct cards to stop a 23 speed 23 damage move that is also a flash. My opponent took games one and two swiftly. If I modify the deck and play it again at locals I will absolutely be hunting for an answer to Deku. 0-2 on round 1.

Round Two I got to fight my good buddy Steven’s SICK Jamie Siu deck! This was a very fun round. I took game one quickly after going first and building 6 foundations and 1 Soup turn 1 and then utilizing Collecting Scraps to pick up multiple Soups and eat his breakers while buffing my attacks. Steven took game two equally as fast by making it very hard to block his Besiege/Attack Titan’s Haymakers, and by using Aerial Kikosho to hit me hard on my attempts to poke. Game 3 was a little bit of a closer battle, but he clenched it. 1-2 on round 2.

Round 3 was against a newly built Leonardo, The Leader deck piloted by our T/O! Thanks for retiring Nighteye Ed! These were again, some fun games! I took Game One after 2 build turns, gave me several assets on board and was able to string Machine Mayhem, into Collecting Scraps, into Technological Advantage and finish the game with a chunky Spinning Swing. Game two took a lot longer but we took it in the end! Playing Sweeping Daggers, removing their Holding All the Cards to give Sweeping +6/+6 and is one hell of a drug!  We took round 3 2-0.

Finishing the event 1-2 for 7th isn’t what I had hoped for obviously, but I am confident that if I make some changes to the deck and get more reps in this character can do some really cool things. The main things I will change in future Void lists are, cutting Machine Mayhem to 1x I really like this attack especially as a block but rarely wanted to commit assets to use it offensively. I would also go to 4x Wingnuts Sabotage, the card is too good and then dropping to 2x Spinning Swing as a bomb of a finisher. I did not like Cabal’s Ruin at all and would replace it with a second Cape of No Return, building one, using it, blocking with the second to build it, and using it again seems great on paper. This deck is a ton of fun and I hope you give your own version a try! As always my decklist is below if you want it!
