Playing Every TMNT Character - Metalhead
We are back with our second entry in Playing Every TMNT Character for the week! Saturday, I played Metalhead, Protector of Mutants on the Earth symbol. Earth offers lots of draw power in things like Electric Moth, Battle Aura Release, Ferocious Attacker, Big Appetite, and many more, as well as good stun and breaker abilities like Gargantuan Grapple and Earthbreaker. The idea behind the deck is to stun out their board on our turn making it difficult to block and use damage reduction to take small amounts of damage and flip their board with our response while using our enhance to power up breaker abilities to end their strings early.
This was a short 2 round event since we only had 4 players, but I feel it was enough to get a feel for the character.
Round 1 I paired into Marvin and his Ryu, World Warrior deck once again. Once again, he beat me up pretty good, stunning out his board and breaker-ing his moves isn’t as helpful when he is building to 15-16 foundations. I definitely should have taken more damage in the early turns both games and avoided blocking as often with my good attacks, but this is a hard matchup to solve with Metalhead. I lost this round 0-2
The 2nd and final round was not much better for poor Metalhead. I paired into Donatello, the Smart One running cards like Rejuvenating Smash, Aerial Goblin Bolt, and Double Fists of the Mortal Flame. I did alright for a while keeping his board stunned down but the assets made it hard to break through and do any real damage. In the end I lost this round 0-2 as well finishing 4th overall.
This character is interesting and fun enough to play but I feel he really suffers as a 5 hander. I had to run so much draw capability in my foundations that I lacked in other tech pieces that could have helped close out games. Initially I was going for more EX and Powerful abilities to increase with his enhance but then thought the deck would suffer from not being able to stockpile momentum early enough to make that very impactful. Again its fun enough but there are just better 5 handers doing similar things like Byakko if you want the “flip all my rivals things” mechanic or even Grog if you want to draw cards and give things big damage. If you have other ideas of what to do with Metalhead drop a comment below! As always, my decklist is included as well!
